CardioBionic is developing a next-generation ventricular assist system (VAS).
A ventricular assist device (VAD) is an implantable mechanical circulatory support (MCS) device used to bridge-to-transplant and/or as a destination therapy for patients with heart failure.
The first VAD implantation was performed Michael DeBakey in 1966, since which VADs and other MCS devices have continued to be developed.
MCS devices such as VADs continue to be important due to factors such as the limited availability of donor hearts for patients with heart failure. Moreover, chronic heart failure is generally increasingly common (i.e., both prevalence and incidence are increasing).
- A portable MCS system (in-development) consisting of a VAD, controller, and clinical interface
- Research and development conducted at CardioBionic's facility in Sydney, Australia
- Multiple animal studies undertaken to date
